Down at the docks

The weather was almost perfect for what I had in mind. Cold, a bit windy and snow in the air. It was dark outside and I wanted to catch a few shots down at the docks.

-1 degree celcius and a rather cold and windy november afternoon. Since we're above the arctic circle it's pretty dark at 5 in the afternoon. Perfect for what I wanted to shoot. Had a hope that a few boats would be down at the docks and maybe have some of the lights and lanterns on. And I got what I hoped for. The Search And Rescue boat "Dagfinn Paust" was perfectly placed with lots of lights on.

So I placed myself right beyond it some 50 meters back and placed my 150mm on the Hasselblad. I had a few frames left of Kodak T-Max 400 which I figured I would use. It was pretty hard to get a good measure of the light though. The dynamic range between pitch dark and bright white was huge and I figured that I would take a couple of readings from the lightmeter and then bracket some shots. That was a good decision. The first shot was way to dark and even the highlights wasn't that good. But the next couple of shots where much better.

But I'm having a hard time deciding which of those two I like the best. On one hand I have the image with more shadow details and then the other one with pretty harsh contrasts which I still like. I will try to make a couple of prints in the darkroom later and maybe then I'll be able to pick out a favorite.

For now, here are the two pictures scanned on the Nikon Coolscan 8000.
